Reading Roundup #39: Closing Chapters

I visited family this past weekend, and while I love them, they do interfere with my reading! It’s rather unsettling actually. I need my alone time! 😂 But I’m safely ensconced in my own little apartment once more, and I did manage to sneak in some good books last week and in the past couple of days, so I think I’ll live. And I finished not one but TWO series! The Raven Cycle was a breakneck readathon that I’m happy to have completed (I need to breathe), but even with a few short story collections remaining, finishing the Lord Peter Wimsey novels has me a bit at loose ends. It feels like I’ve been reading them for so long, it’s hard to imagine I’m almost out of new stories! I think I’ll dive into some Agatha Christie next to satisfy my murder mystery needs. In the meantime – thoughts on what I’ve already read!

Lord Peter Wimsey #10-11 by Dorothy L. Sayers: Gaudy Night and Busman’s Honeymoon were a great way to round out the Wimsey series! Watching Sayers develop her characters has been a pleasure from the start, but even with the best series, you worry the author won’t quite stick the landing. But she really did! It feels like Harriet and Peter have finally reached a good place in their relationship and in their individual growth, and even though hard times will surely come, they’ll be able to weather them. Plus, there’s just so much going on on an intellectual level that I know I’ll be mulling over these books (and especially Busman’s Honeymoon‘s ending) for some time yet.

Raven Cycle #2-4 by Maggie Stiefvater: I’m so glad I finally got around to this series because what a delight it has been! Stiefvater has created a quirky, terrifying world of wonders, and each time something strange popped up (robo bees? long-lost fathers living in literal closets? hello!), I just cackled and embraced it. I actually would have liked to see her go go a bit harder – the final arc of each book always felt like she was holding back a bit instead of going full-throttle, which meant the win always felt a little too easy. But that’s also fine on a personal level because I, too, don’t want anything truly terrible to happen to these beautiful, broken kids. I’m so proud of how far they’ve come since book one!

  1. What is it about having a book in front of you that entices people to get in your face or interrupt you? It happens to me all the time and it’s so irritating 😂 I’ve heard great things about the Raven Cycle and I’m looking forward to checking out the series at some point. Hope you have a great week ahead!

    1. Right? At least with my family, I know it’s just because they miss me. I hope you enjoy Raven Cycle whenever you get to it! It’s imperfect but such kooky fun, and it has a lot of heart.
