I’m still trying to limit my screen time, so I’m just popping in for a quick roundup of the (short) books I finished this week. One, of course, is really just a long poem, but I’m still saying it counts!

Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Rojas Contreras: This was my second read-through of this book, and I found I liked it more this time. The sense of narrative distance made more sense, knowing it is told through the eyes of two young women who are deeply traumatized by what happened to them. I was able to engage more of my emotions, but, of course, knowing what happens also made that engagement more difficult (I admit it — I skipped a few of the final chapters). Still, while this is a tough read, I wouldn’t call it a hopeless read. The end leaves me with the impression of resilience and a determination not just to hope but to make those hopes come true. I’m glad I came back to it.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia #1) by C.S. Lewis: It’s been years since I’ve read any of the Narnia books, and I was delighted by how well this one holds up. I remembered all the broad strokes but had forgotten some of the details (poor Mrs. Beaver, having to leave behind her sewing machine!) — I’d also forgotten how quickly everything happens, so there’s not a moment for boredom. I’m excited to continue reacquainting myself with Narnia and its inhabitants.
“The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge: I don’t read much poetry these days, but this one has been coming up a lot in my research of Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, so I thought it was time for a refresher. Coleridge’s language is wonderfully vivid, and his rhythm is mesmerizing — I had to go back several times because I was so lulled by it that I missed what was actually happening! I still feel the need to read it a few more times to feel like I really got everything, but I find I don’t mind the prospect. After all, who doesn’t love adventures on the high seas?
I hope you’re all well and safe and have plenty of good stories to keep you company!
