Hello and happy Wednesday! I’m popping my head out of my cave to check in and share this week’s reads. It’s all about the chase this week, the push-and-pull as two people feel out a new relationship — or put a new spin on an old one.

Games in a Ballroom by Jentry Flint: With wonderful characters and a fun premise, Games in a Ballroom was one I really wanted to love, but it fell just short of the mark. The pacing and tone are uneven, particularly in the final act, when a slow build of tension (both dramatic and romantic) suddenly ratchets up to a hundred. I rarely say this, but I think this book needs to be longer — and to either commit to one tone or find a better way to blend the comedy and melodrama. On the other hand, there are some lovely moments dealing with grief and friendship, and the friend group at the core is one of my favorites in recent memory. If there’s a sequel, I’ll definitely read it. My thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain publishing for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Talk Flirty to Me by Livy Hart: When former high school sweethearts with unresolved baggage team up to record a steamy audiobook, they’re determined to keep things professional. But in a small town, their lives are hopelessly entangled, and resisting each other has never been their strong suit. In her debut novel, Livy Hart pulls out all the stops and tropes, from brother’s best friend to only one bed, and adds some extra flair to keep it fresh. The first person narration alternates between the leads, and their voices are sharp and wisecracking without being obnoxious or cringe, which is a tricky balance. I rooted for them from the start, fell in love with the heroine’s big boisterous family, and thoroughly enjoyed watching these hopeless romantics find their way back to each other. The perfect mix of funny, emotional, and sexy. My thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing, LLC for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wallbanger (Cocktail #1) by Alice Clayton: Some of my friends were reading this, so I picked it up to see what the fuss was about. For some quick, sexy fun, it does the trick… and it really left me craving zucchini bread, which I was not expecting! The leads are likable and fun, and the pace moves at a good clip, which is always a plus in my book (haha).
And that’s it! I enjoyed all of these books for one reason or another but no new favorites, and I’m so ready to fall in love with a new book. Any recommendations?
